The streets and roads were empty and quiet this early evening and I could hear my own footsteps as they pounded on the asphalt or fell through the soft soil of the trail. I can never forget the imperfections in the sidewalks and the rooted trails, where the surface rises and dips with the tree roots popping through the ground like veins, where the loose segments can make you stumble and fall. The evening felt warmer than I expected (I've overdressed a little bit), but I was committed to finish, even if sweating.
